  25. Limitations and/or notes:

  27. 1. Features: 
  28.    A. Afterburners at approximately 95% RPM (Light 'em up!)
  29.    B. Working strobes
  30.    C. Wings automatically sweep at 350 KIAS
  31.  
  32. 2. Visual limitations:
  33.    A. Landing Gear can sometimes briefly be seen through engine pods 
  34.    B. No flaps, lights, or spoilers are visble when used
  35.  
  36. 3. Flight model:
  37.    A. Generally accurate from 150-600 kts indicated
  38.    B. Recommend Auto coordination ON when flying approaches
  39.    C. Remember, this is a large jet, although very responsive, has the same 
  40.       G limitations as a large commerical aircraft. Also, the model flies very
  41.       differently at high vs low gross weight.

  43. 4. Numbers to know (real world):
  44.    A. Max AOA on takeoff or landing: 10 degress due to tail strike
  45.    B. Always use full flaps for takeoff and landing
  46.    C. Rotate and Takeoff Speeds: 210 Gross - 119 Rotate / 134 Takeoff
  47.                                  390 Gross - 168 Rotate / 183 Takeoff
  48.    D. Landing Speeds:            210 Gross - 145

  51. 5. FAQs:
  52.    A. Why no visual flaps, spoilers, etc?
  53.       In FSFS, you can't make things double conditional (ie you can't say
  54.       show this flap only if wings are forward AND flap lever is put down)
  55.       To make the flaps look right, the wings would have either have had to 
  56.       fixed forward, or not put visual on the flaps.  Otherwise, someone could
  57.       put the flaps down while the wings are back, and you end up visually 
  58.       with flaps hanging in space!
  59.    B. Why no burner flames out the back this time?
  60.       Because of the enormous complexity of this visual model, I quite
  61.       literally ran out of parts. The current visual model sits at 539 parts!
  62.       The B-1B fuselage has many compound curves, which if not broken down into
  63.       all convex parts components, etc., you can end up with some strange 
  64.       visual effects.  Structures where kept to an absolute minimum! Therefore,
  65.       no parts left to do burners!
  66.    C. Hey, when the aircraft stalls, I cant recover!
  67.       This is part of the flight model problem with FSFS. I have heard a lot
  68.       of complaints about the standard FSFS flight models, yawing being a big
  69.       one.  I try to compromise as best I can to get decent flight models, but
  70.       you are always welcome to try to improve it.  However, in the real B-1B,
  71.       life imitates art. If you stall in a real B-1B, the aircraft WILL NOT
  72.       recover.  It will pitch up abruptly, and never restabilize!  So for once
  73.       the flight model actually comes close near the limit!

  75. Brief development history:
  76. --------------------------
  77. The Rockwell B-1 Lancer was originally developed as the B-1A, a high altitude
  78. supersonic strategic bomber capable of Mach 2.0.  It was intended to reach 
  79. active service in the late 1970s, and eventually replace the B-52. However, the
  80. program was cancelled by then President Jimmy Carter back in the late 1970s.
  81.  
  82. However, when President Ronald Reagan took office in 1980, he proceeded to 
  83. update all of the United States strategic forces, with the authorized
  84. of the B-1B to supplement the bomber forces until the ATB (B-2) came on line.
  85. Therefore, the B-1B production, testing, and validation went on all at once!
  86. The first operational squadron was activated in 1985 at Dyess AFB, TX with 
  87. 83-0065, 'The Star of Abilene'. 100 B-1Bs were built. Because testing was 
  88. going on at the same time as production, the B-1B had only recently become
  89. certified to drop conventional weapons at the same time as the Persian Gulf
  90.  conflict of 1991, thereby 'missing' that theatre.

  92. The B-1B is optimized for low altitude, all weather, day or night deep
  93. penetration bombing.  Its main features include crisp handing, a auto
  94. Terrain Following system that allows high speed low level with no outside
  95. visability, high speed in excess of 9 miles a minute at sea level, long
  96. range, and large payload. Its swing wings allow a wide flight envelope.
